An Overview of Paediatric Dermatoses

"Skin and subcutaneous diseases contribute to significant morbidity worldwide, but they do not get due importance in national health planning and policies in several countries. The prevalence and patterns of skin diseases are intricately linked to regional ecosystems.1 This session provided an epidemiological overview of skin diseases in India, focusing on bacterial, fungal, and viral infections, as well as infestations and dermatitis in children. The speaker highlighted that ecological factors, socio-economic status, and literacy levels profoundly impact skin health in the paediatric population. Discussions encompassed the impact of paediatric skin diseases on self-image, stigma, academic performance, and psychiatric well-being. Detailed insights were provided into the frequency, causative organisms, types, complications, differential diagnoses, and management strategies for bacterial skin infections, such as impetigo, folliculitis, furuncles, and ecthyma. Fungal infections like tinea infections, viral conditions, including warts and molluscum contagiosum, and parasitic infestations, such as scabies and head lice were also addressed. Treatment modalities included topical and oral antibiotics for bacterial infections, cryotherapy for warts, topical agents like Silver nitrate for molluscum contagiosum, and strategies involving topical emollients and corticosteroids for atopic dermatitis and diaper dermatitis. Diaper dermatitis is prevalent in infants aged 9-12 months, and its prevention is crucial. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches are paramount for managing diaper dermatitis.2
